Week of October 11th – October 15th

A Note from Ms. Sickler

  • It is important that everyone works together to make the parent drop-off/pick-up run smoothly.  Please be aware of the following rules:
    • Do not leave your car unattended at anytime in the pick-up loop or the drive into and out of the school!
    • A student may not walk into the pick-up loop to enter a vehicle.  They may only enter the vehicle at the curb and enter on the passenger side of the car.
    • The pick-up loop is a single loop, DO NOT wait two abreast and have your child walk between cars to your car on the inside lane.  This land at the end of the day is only for cars moving out of the pick-up line to exit the parking lot.
    • DO NOT use the bus loop to pick up your child or park your car, the buses will block you in.

District Notes

SAS is continuing with a goal revision process for our SAS Strategic Framework. The four goals that are being revised include:

  1. All students will meet or exceed state standards across all curricular areas and acquire the essential skills to be continuous learners and productive citizens in an increasingly global society.
  2. Strengthen family-school relationships and continue to expand partnerships that support student achievement.
  3. Enhance a positive school environment that promotes student and staff well-being, satisfaction, and positive morale.
  4. The district shall establish short-term financial stability and long-term fiscal solvency.

Community workgroups are revising these goals with a target of completing them in late fall.

Transportation Message:

SAS Families,

As you know, there is a critical shortage of bus drivers, substitutes, and monitors. Currently, we have four uncovered routes that are being filled by our Director of Operations, Transportation Coordinator, and long-time retirees and valued substitutes.

In the somewhat-likely event that bus driver absences occur, your child’s route may be canceled for the day. To prepare for this potential cancellation:

  1. You are encouraged to “opt-in” to notifications in the Ride 360 App (PLEASE be sure you are receiving notifications). On Monday, September 27th, we will send a test notification via Ride 360 – please be on the lookout for this message.

  2. We will send a secondary notification using school systems such as School Messenger.

Important Notes:

  • Because our transportation office staff is out driving buses, you should not call the transportation office if your route is canceled. No one will be available to assist you.

  • If a morning route is canceled, you will know by Noon if your student has PM transportation. However, you should be prepared to provide your own transportation both ways.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these challenging times.

If you have questions, please reach out to us here

Have a great weekend.

Rex Clary and Tracey Mulcare

From Dr. Laatsch’s Community Message:

Important for our families that rely on the Nutrislice webpage for allergy and carbohydrate information:

Please be sure to check with the cafeteria manager at your child’s school regarding product substitutions that may not be reflected in the menu posted. We will make every attempt to update Nutrislice in real-time, but out of an abundance of caution, please do not solely rely on the digital nutrition panels to accommodate allergies or medical conditions.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your student’s meals, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school’s cafeteria manager or Larry D’Andrea, Director of Dining Services at dandreal@salineschools.org or 734-401-4350. Thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility during this time.

Did You Know?

Did you know that SHS has Project Lead The Way (PLTW-Biomedical Science) series of four experimental and innovative, hands-on, real world, science-based courses offered at Saline High School? For many of our projects, we require the use of an “authentic audience.” The size and demographics of each panel will vary depending on the type of project. In addition, we often require the use of guest speakers of various backgrounds and expertise.  We would like to invite anyone in the community who is interested in either speaking or joining us as a panel member to fill out this survey. This does not “sign you up” for anything. It simply adds you to our list of interested community members to invite based on our needs. You can turn down an invitation at any time.

District Notes

From Dr. Laatsch’s Community Message:

When there is a positive covid case identified, a building-wide notification letter is required to be sent by local school districts per the MDHHS. We apologize if these letters seem repetitive. However, we are trying to keep everyone informed of ongoing COVID-19 cases in our school buildings while complying with this requirement. Please know that we will only send notification letters when there is a potential risk to our student/staff population because the positive person was in school during their contagious period. We will not send notifications when a positive is reported but the student/staff member was not in school or at school-related activity during their contagious period. These cases will be reflected in the weekly dashboard.

We also are posting all our known positive cases (and students in quarantine) on our SAS Covid Dashboard. It is important to note that for this school year, many students are able to “quarantine” in school by wearing a mask and participating in COVID rapid antigen testing that our SAS staff is overseeing, as outlined by the WCHD. Please refer to the health department guidance (flowsheets) posted on our district website. Reach out to Karan Hervey, District Nurse, if you have any questions about the MDHHS notification requirements or the health department guidelines. We appreciate your partnership as we continue to navigate the pandemic together!

A throwback of when I brought a special guest (my sister Elizabeth!) to read one of our shared favorite stories.  This weekend we were able to travel to see each other.

Week of August 30th – September 3rd

A Note from Ms. Sickler

As you might imagine, the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity here at Harvest. It has been so heartwarming to see our teachers and staff coming together to prepare the building to welcome students once again.

I know that there will be new challenges to solve, new triumphs to celebrate, and new fears to face.  We do not know what the future will bring, but I do know this; on Monday morning we will open the doors to Harvest and welcome all students into classrooms once again. The sights and sounds of children and teachers learning from and with each other, together in one space, will fill the school. And whatever lies ahead, we will face it together.

We will not return to ‘normal,’ but perhaps normal was never the goal. We learned that we are stronger than we knew. We learned that we are braver than we thought. Most importantly, we learned that we are better together.

Thank you for entrusting us with your children, thank you for allowing us to grow and learn together. It is truly an honor.

If you are able to, drop in, when you can, to chalk the walk and welcome the students back to school on Sunday, August 29th. Let’s send them off with a smile & start this school year with positivity. Draw, write, & doodle happy messages. Bring chalk if you have it. Think about bus loop, walk from the parent lot, etc. Let’s do this for the kids!!

I am looking forward to this view filled with our Harvest Hornets on Monday morning!  Please take a look at our arrival/dismissal plan and where your child will line up each morning in THIS presentation.

From Dr. Laatsch’s August 27th Community Message:

For the first day of school, August 30th, and the first week of school, we will be requiring and enforcing mask wearing for all students and staff in all grades in this “high” phase of COVID-19 transmission. If a student forgets a mask, we will have an ample supply and will provide a new one. Students are not permitted to go to class without a mask. For elementary students, mask breaks will occur at recess, snack time, and other times throughout the day.  For all students, mask breaks will occur during lunch and when teachers conduct outside events/activities/breaks.

District Notes

From Dr. Laatsch’s August 20th’s Community Message:

I do know this. ALL of our parents and community members care about three things:

  1. Getting our students back to 5 days a week of in-person instruction

  2. The social-emotional well being and academic achievement of our students

  3. Working towards a day when all of these Covid protocols (including mask-wearing) are unnecessary

Most of us are feeling some loss and despair regarding the grip that COVID-19 still holds on our community and our children in particular. Many of you have expressed concerns that mask-wearing is detrimental to children’s social-emotional well-being. I understand this concern. However, there are ways that children (and adults) can offset any of these social-emotional concerns as referenced in our Continue to Learn Plan – Community Frequently Asked Questions document (see “Mask Wearing” question #4). We are also going to be working with our teachers to provide frequent mask breaks, especially for our youngest learners, so they can “see” each other on a regular basis.

Dr. Laatsch’s Community Message

From Dr. Laatsch’s August 13th Community Message:

Current  Phase – COVID-19 Transmission

Washtenaw County is currently in the “substantial” phase of Covid transmission. During this phase, the CDC is recommending the use of masks in indoor spaces. As a result, SAS is now recommending the use of masks indoors in our facilities for all students and staff, particularly when in crowded spaces. However, this is not a requirement and mask-wearing will not be enforced at this point.

We have announced that IF Washtenaw County is in the “substantial” phase (or higher) of Covid transmission as we start hosting events with a greater density of students, staff, and community members, SAS will be requiring mask wearing for all participants. Examples of events include WEB, Link Crew, Schedule Pick-Up, and Open Houses. SAS will communicate with stakeholders about mask-wearing requirements at these events.

For the first day of school, August 30th, we will be requiring mask wearing for all students and staff in all grades IF we are in the “substantial” or “high” phase of Covid transmission. If we are in the “low” or “moderate” phase of transmission, we will be requiring mask wearing for all students and staff in grades Y5-6th grade AND recommending (not requiring) mask wearing for all students and staff in grades 7 and higher.

We will be referring to this CDC COVID  Data Tracker  (consistent with the Washtenaw County Health Department’s tracking process) when making decisions related to these 4 phases of COVID-19 transmission (low, moderate, substantial, and high). Every Friday, I will communicate out to the SAS Community to explain what phase of Covid transmission we are in AND what our mask requirements will be for the upcoming week.

District Notes

From Superintendent Laatsch’s June 10th Community Message:

The 2020-2021 school year will be remembered as the year of resilience in the face of unexpected circumstances. As a collective whole (staff, families, and our Saline community), we have found countless ways to support our students and provide them with the best experience possible during a global pandemic.

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe, relaxing summer break. Our wish list for students is below:

  • Put down devices

  • Play outside

  • Read something new every day

  • Lend a helping hand

  • Create something masterful

Students will return to school on Monday, August 30th, 2021. This means we have 82 days to make memories with friends and family. Our staff will be eager to teach them when they return, until then we hope they spend time being kids.
