Did You Know?

Did you know there is a chess camp for Harvest Hornets in June?  John Smalec has been teaching chess and organizing chess camps for young people for over 35 years. Some of his students have gone on to become chess masters and teach chess full-time.   John has played in National and International tournaments since 1972 when Bobby Fischer won the world championship. His tournament schedule has taken him to St. Martin’s, The Isle of Man, St. Petersburg, Russia and Reykjavik, Iceland. Closer to home he has played in the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur and several times in our state championship known as the Michigan Open.  The interest in Scholastic chess has grown over the years. In the 1980’s the state children’s championship might have had 40 students. Since then some of these same events have had close to 400 young people.   John enjoys helping young people and answering the questions of parents.  so feel free to contact him anytime at adventuresinchess@gmail.com

A Note from Ms. Sickler

A few reminders that we need everyone to follow to keep all Harvest Hornets safe.  Thank you for everyone working together to ensure our pick-up loop runs smoothly in the morning and afternoon.

    • Do not leave your car unattended at anytime in the pick-up loop or the drive into and out of the school!
    • A student may not walk into the pick-up loop to enter a vehicle.  They may only enter the vehicle at the curb and enter on the passenger side of the car.
    • The pick-up loop is a single loop, DO NOT wait two abreast and have your child walk between cars to your car on the inside lane.  This land at the end of the day is only for cars moving out of the pick-up line to exit the parking lot.
    • DO NOT use the bus loop to pick up your child or park your car, the buses will block you in.

April 13:  Parent/Caregiver DEI Education Series (via zoom) 7:00 pm

SAS Community,

I am asking you to vote in the upcoming May 2nd election. Saline Area Schools will be on the ballot for an operating millage renewal. This is not a BOND, it is a 10 year millage renewal proposal that is part of the normal, day-to-day, funding structure for all Michigan School Districts.

If you only own one home, you would NOT pay this millage. It would be paid by second home owners, businesses and all other non-principal residence property owners.

It would help SAS continue to generate a little over $8.5 million dollars for the GENERAL OPERATING budget (the budget that helps pay for teachers and other staff members) on an annual basis for the next 10 years.

If you have more questions about this operating millage proposal, please go to www.salineschools.org and you can click on the pop-up button “Millage Renewal 2023.”

Please click HERE for more details about the SAS Millage Renewal.

For questions, feedback, or concerns….please click HERE and fill out the form.

Again, Please vote on May 2nd.

Thank you,

Superintendent Laatsch

A Note from Ms. Sickler

100 days of school and still loving it

We have a very busy week ahead at Harvest… the 100th day of school is on Monday, Valentine’s Day is on Tuesday, and an Early Release Day (1:10pm dismissal, lunch will be served) is on Friday.

To add to the excitement of the week, during dismissal on Monday, we will be having architects assess our traffic pattern to begin the process of redoing our parking lots.  This will entail multiple King Scott architects on site and a drone in the air during dismissal.

Finally, this week Kindergarten – 3rd Grade families will be receiving scores that reflect both reading and math from the district. This screening instrument (Acadiance) is used to assess early literacy skills as well as basic math skills and fluency. This tool is a snapshot of what your child can do right now in a timed situation that is norm-referenced.
