Week of May 31st – June 4th

A Note From Ms. Sickler

One of our favorite traditions at Harvest is a chance to “clap out” our third grade students.  Our entire building lines the halls to allow our third graders a final chance to walk the halls and wave goodbye to their teachers from previous years.  Traditionally, we invite our families inside to join us in this momentous occasion.  This year, we still plan on having a chance to clap out our third graders with some small changes to ensure everyone’s safety.
  • We invite all families to line up outside at 12:00pm on the playground track.  No need to check in the office ahead of time, please just come and line up on the track.
  • Our community is experiencing different levels of comfort during this pandemic.  Though wearing masks is not obligatory outdoors, please consider supporting others by wearing your mask.
  • Our third graders will parade the halls then walk outside the first-grade doors, take a lap around the track, and then walk to the front of the building for dismissal at 12:10pm.
  • Noisemakers, cowbells, and other celebratory items strongly encouraged (don’t forget your tissues too).

Young 5s, Kindergarten, 1st-grade, and 2nd-grade classes will be dismissed at 12:10pm through the main doors as usual.

3rd Grade Virtual families – Students that want to participate in the clap out at Woodland Meadows or Harvest head to those schools to prepare for the clap out at 11:45am. Harvest students will meet Mrs. Nelson and Ms. Knoedler at the doors closest to the playground and the first-grade hallway. Woodland Meadows students will check-in at the office and will be directed to Mr. Perry’s classroom

Last Chance – Input forms close June 11th!  If you would like to provide input for your child’s placement for the 2021-2022 school year, please use the Google Forms listed below:

From Dr. Laatsch’s May 28th Community Message…

Latest Covid-19 Health Guidance

As mentioned previously, we will continue to require masks to be worn in our school buildings for the remainder of the school year.

As it relates to outdoor recess,  the Washtenaw County Health Department has determined that it is OK for students to NOT wear masks IF there are less than 100 students out at any one time. Building principals and teachers are monitoring this closely when out on recess duty.

As we move to the end of the year, there are some school-building celebrations that are starting to take place. We are applying the same recess rule to these events. If these celebrations involve less than 100 students at any one time, masks will not be required to be worn. If there are over 100 students, we will require masks.

As it relates to the following school year, District Nurse, Karan Hervey, and I will be working closely with our local health department to determine how the vaccination process, covid rates, and other mitigation strategies will impact the start of the 2021/22 school year on August 30th. Again, we are planning for a full 5-day a week in-person instructional model.  We will make sure to keep the community informed throughout the summer regarding our planning processes.

District Notes

The newest guidance from the health department states that students can take off their masks for recess if there are 100 or less students out on the playground at any time.  If we have over 100 students outside, masks should be worn at that point. Indoors, students should continue to mask as we have all year.

A Note From Ms. Sickler

Calling All Books!  We are officially done with book check out in the media center for the year.  While it’s a highlight of our time together in media, getting all of the books collected now will ensure that everything is back and ready to start the year in the fall.  We are asking that all books be returned to the media center by June 1st.  If you are unsure of which books your child may have checked out or still needs to return, please email Mrs. Reeves (reevesm@salineschools.org) directly and she will send you that information.  Thank you in advance for your help in this process.

Third Grade Families: Reminder that students are taking the ELA MSTEP on Monday and MATH MSTEP on Wednesday.

You can assist your child in preparation for testing by doing the following:

Test Anxiety:

Students may experience anxiety about tests and may experience heightened anxiety before a testing situation. A certain degree of test anxiety is normal. Too much anxiety, however, can negatively affect performance. The following strategies may assist students and parents in reducing test anxiety.

  • Discuss the test openly and in a positive way.
  • Have realistic expectations of your child’s performance while encouraging their best efforts.
  • Emphasize that the test is only one measure of academic performance.

We very much appreciate your support!

From Dr. Laatsch’s May 14th Community Message:

As it relates to the latest CDC guidance on not needing to wear masks for those people who are fully vaccinated, it is very unclear on how this will apply to school settings in the future. MDHHS (Michigan Department of Health and Human Services) is in the process of reviewing the updated CDC guidance regarding masks. We will keep you updated if our local guidance changes. For now, we continue to operate under the state of Michigan Gatherings and Face Mask Order as advised by the Washtenaw County Health Department. Therefore, we will continue to require masks in our schools.

Wishing all our moms a Happy Mother’s Day!  We are so appreciative of YOU!

A few items to note:

  • Thank you for continuing to support a healthy learning environment for our students. It’s nice to see COVID positive cases trending in a better direction in our community.  Understandably, it is important that we continue to be cautious.  Before and after school drop off/pick up are busy times at Harvest.  Our community is experiencing different levels of comfort during this pandemic.  Though wearing masks is not obligatory outdoors, please consider supporting others by wearing your mask at arrival and dismissal times, when leaving your car, to drop off and pick up your students.
  • Parking Loop Reminder – only use the loop at pick-up to pick up your 2nd or 3rd-grade student.  We ask our Y5-1st grade families to park and meet your child.

Thank you for the team effort!

A Note From Ms. Sickler

Make sure you thank a teacher (or five!) this week and let them know how much you love and appreciate them. Harvest has the best teachers in Michigan!  ALL the adults in our building are teachers, teaching in the classroom, the office, in small groups, in the cafeteria, and all other spaces where our students learn and grow.

Our amazing PTA has organized special events each day for our staff including snacks on Monday, lunch on Tuesday, breakfast on Wednesday, and an extra-long lunch on Thursday.  We need your help.  Please sign up HERE if you can help cover a post-lunch recess for your child’s grade level.
