We are EXTENDING the Harvest Science Fair Sign Up through MONDAY, January 27!
The Harvest Science Fair is an opportunity for children to learn by doing. This is not a competition, just a place for the students to teach each other about an area of science that interests them. It doesn’t have to be perfect, expensive, or time consuming, just fun.
Here are some example topics and ideas that might spark inspiration:
Experiments/ Testing:
What chewing gum has the longest lasting flavor?
Which type of chocolate melts the fastest, milk, dark, or white?
Comparing paper airplane designs
Testing the distance of a soccer ball based on inflation

Building models to explain a concept:
Mini volcanoes (using baking soda and vinegar)
Building a solar system
Constellations
Demonstrations:
Potato battery clocks
Slime making
Crystal growing
Self-inflating balloons
Sugar content in drinks
The topic possibilities are limitless. Your student will have an opportunity to demonstrate or explain their project throughout the evening. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity and join us on Tuesday, February 4th from 6 to 7:30 pm at the Harvest Elementary Science Fair.

Did You Know?

Did you know that about five years ago, Harvest jumped into research and developed a new homework policy that we view is of greater benefit to our students and families. This is not a no homework policy, rather it is a shift in our belief, based upon research, that homework should be something a student does that is of high interest and extends a child’s learning and wonder.

Over the years we have seen an increase in homework, with that the pressure and stress amongst students and parents is also increasing. As we continue to research this topic, there is no evidence that supports improved student performance associated with homework especially before middle school. Most homework robs our children and our families of our most precious resource: time. Time to think, play, and connect with one another and friends. There is also a decrease in time to read, rest, discover, run, fall, fail and learn from it all.  Most importantly, time to love. Read more HERE

Week of January 20th – January 24th

A Note From Ms. Sickler

Please be aware of a number of events that support our Harvest students and families:

  • The 2020 Harvest Science Fair is coming up on Tuesday, February 4 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30. Registration will be open until Friday, January 24.  Groups, individuals or families can submit projects. There are no specific requirements for project topics or presentation, and projects will not be judged. Let’s have fun with science and get our kids excited about learning!  You can register online HERE. Additional information will be sent to participants as the date approaches.  If you cannot access the online form or are having trouble with electronic registration, then please contact Mrs.Bekkala at the Harvest office at (734) 401-4500 to sign up.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Faith Hart at jimhart16@yahoo.com or Wendy Evans at wshows2003@gmail.com

At this time we are looking to compile a list of families who have an interest in participating. Students can group together if they choose to as well. Everyone is welcome to participate and attend!  Please fill out the interest form HERE.

  • Girls on the Run is excited to bring this program to Harvest for another great year.  We are in need of coaches!  You don’t have to be a runner, just enthusiastic about building confidence in our 3rd grade girls!  Girls on the Run provides all of the materials and training – we just need a few energetic people to deliver this great program.  Contact info@girlsontherunsemi.org or Harvest site liaison Joyce Mueller (joycemueller@gmail.com / 734-972-7389) for more information.

Week of January 13th – 17th

A Note From Ms. Sickler

Please take a moment to review our Harvest drop-off/pick-up rules. To keep all of the children safe at Harvest Elementary School we ask that you follow these rules when dropping off or picking up your child from school.

Morning Drop-Off

  • Do not park anywhere in the drop-off loop or anywhere in the drive leading into the loop.  If you need to enter the building, please park in the lot adjacent to the drop-off loop and come into the building.
  • The morning drop-off is a seven-second drop-off.  Do not exit your vehicle in the drop-off loop.
  • Traffic will begin to back up into the parking areas.  As always, you may choose to park in either lot and walk your child to the front door.  If you park in the west lot, please do not walk between school buses.  This is not safe, as our drivers cannot see you passing there.
  • Children MUST exit the car on the passenger side of the car while in the drop-off loop.  If your child needs to exit the car on the driver’s side, please park your car in a designated parking place.  Walk your child to the sidewalk.  Children may then proceed to the entrance on their own.

Afternoon Pick-Up

  • Do not leave your car unattended at any time in the pick-up loop or the drive into and out of the school.
  • You may be ticketed if your vehicle is found unattended.
  • Students may not walk into the pick-up loop to enter a vehicle.  They may only enter the vehicle at the curb and enter on the passenger side of the car.
  • When parking in either parking lot, please walk to the sidewalk and meet your child there.  Students may not walk into a parking lot unattended at any time.
  • If parking in the west parking lot (closest to Saline High School), please walk with your child to the parking lot behind the line of busses and not between the busses.

Thank you for taking the time to review these rules to ensure we keep all Harvest students safe.

Ms. Sickler

Harvest Families,

This year’s Science Fair will be held in the Harvest cafeteria and gymnasium on Tuesday, February 4, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30. The Science Fair is open to all Harvest students in young 5’s through third grade and is completely optional. Additional information with a sign up link will be sent out after winter break.

If you would like to get a head start over the break and are looking for ideas for a project, there are many books in our school and public libraries to help inspire your creativity.  The following websites are also full of great ideas:

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Faith Hart at jimhart16@yahoo.com or Wendy Evans at wshows2003@gmail.com

Hope to see you there!

Did You Know?

Did you know that students go outside for recess every day if the temperature is 10 degrees or warmer (factoring in windchill). Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  I noticed this great resource in the kindergarten hallway of all the items that keep our students warm and able to enjoy recess.  If you are in need of winter clothes for your child, please contact Ms. Sickler or Mrs. Pickett, Harvest Social Worker.
